Dance, Drums, Dragonflies at Ogden Nature Center!

(an opening event for the Utah EE Conference - open to the public)
Thursday October 6 6pm - 7:30 pm

deja_keynote

Deja views her dancing and teaching as a means of bringing people into an experience of greater centeredness and connection, both within themselves, and in the world they live in. Her goals for her students are a deeper experience within themselves and an expansive connection to the world. She sees her students as capable and abundant resources of self actualization, and encourages their journey of self-discovery. From the children she teaches with myriad combinations of hearing, sight, physical and mental abilities, to the elders in the community, she fosters joy and possibility through expressing movement.

Deja has a degree in modern dance from Utah State University and has specialized in traditional African dance & drumming for the last 14 years. She was drawn to African dance because of the power of the rhythms, the strong connection to the earth, and it's joyful expression of humanity. She teaches at Eccles Community Art Center, University of Utah Tanner Dance, independent workshops and performances, creative & cultural dance in public schools, and is an adjunct professor for African dance at Weber State University.

Not only is Deja a dancer and performer, she is also actively engaged in making positive change in the world through her role as a community leader advocating for environmentally appropriate development, supporting humanitarian work in Africa, and running a fair-trade, organic coffee shop with her husband.

Urban Flea Market

A new tradition has begun in Salt Lake this year, and one that could eventually rival that of the Farmers Market and Living Traditions: the Urban Flea Market. Started in July of this year the Urban Flea market is held once every month on a Sunday, and runs until October. Nestled in Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City, the flea market offers items that range from vintage clothing to handmade crafts. Not only does this event foster a strong sense of community but encourages the positive effects of reusing and recycling, and purchasing home-made products.

Vintage items have become the popular items at the Flea Market and have added a vibrancy to the urban market. Today antiques are not only appealing just because they are old, but because they are green. The Flea Market provides an opportunity for household items to be re-purposed and reused instead of occupying landfill space. Instead of reproductions, Salt Lake’s Urban Flea Market offers original items. It leads people to seek out original pieces, rather than reproductions, as it focuses toward reuse and recycling instead of over consumption.

My own family participated in the event and like the other vendors, we were unpacking our various merchandise hours before the market opened. Once the market opened at nine, a stream of shoppers and locals were prevalent throughout the day, as families, older couples, and teens searched for that one item they couldn’t live without. The last flea market of the year will be held October 9th, so make sure to come on down, enjoy a day with your family, and help make the world a little greener.

Additional Info:

The market is held at Washington Square, at the City-County Building, the corner of 500 South and 200 East. Admission is free and 10-foot by 10-foot booth spaces for up to 80 vendors are available to rent for $30 a day. It includes a children’s arts and crafts area, family-friendly music, and pets available for adoption from the Humane Society.

Meet Anthony

Hey my name is Anthony Oyler, and I am a new volunteer for USEE. I am a senior at Judge Memorial High School and can be usually found participating in a number of events there. I work on Student Council, my school paper (The Bulldog Press), environmental club, National Honor Society, and boys volleyball. I come from a very large and extended Italian family in which I enjoy spending all of my time with. Currently I have been looking at numerous colleges determining where I would like to go. I plan on majoring in Environmental Engineering , as a way to combine my passion for both science and math, with the conservation of our planet and finding new renewable energy sources. My interest also lies in service, one of the keys reasons I chose to volunteer for USEE, and once in college I hope to become involved in Engineers without Borders. Yet I believe the first step to reach my degree is understanding how to educate others on the environment, including myself. I can’t wait to get started on the various programs and projects, learning the ins-outs, and hopefully making a difference.

Bash In A Week!

The bash is meant to highlight the work of USEE, promote networking of EE supporters and to raise critical funds for the organization to help us meet our mission.
