Member Highlight: Utah Museum of Natural History



USEE staffer Marta Nielsen shares insights into the Utah Museum of Natural History’s new facility from a tour with School Programs Director (and USEE Board President) Madlyn Runburg

If you have driven up by Red Butte Gardens or been on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail lately, you’ll have seen it: the beautiful new building near completion for the Utah Museum of Natural History. While the exhibits inside are still being installed, and the collections are being prepped for display, Utah’s natural environment is showcased in the building design, inside and out.


Outside the Museum

To represent the geological and mineralogical history, the exterior of this building is banded with three different copper alloys, which will each develop a unique and beautiful patina over time. The exterior not only harmonizes with the foothills on which the building sits, but visually emulates geological stratification and landforms. There are also social spaces featured on outside of the building like patios and seating for the Museum café offer visitors beautiful views of the Salt Lake Valley.

There are also multiple outdoor learning spaces like learning terraces outside of the galleries. A favorite is sure to be the terrace off of the Native Voices gallery which includes an amphitheater with seating for up to 100 people. Of special note to the energy curious visitor is the sky terrace that overlooks the rooftop. The roof, covered with white reflective material (to increase albedo), will include arrays of solar panels and landscaping. Another green feature of this project are the parking lots leading up to the new building. They aren’t your typical asphalt, but permeable. This feature allows for natural drainage, and will hopefully be one of many aspects that will allow the Museum to achieve LEED Gold certification. In addition to the many sustainable building features, Museum supporters have successfully preserved the Museum site’s oak grove through a protective easement.



Interior Design

Ennead Architects and Gillies Stransky Brems Smith are the lead architects for the new building, and while the final design is nothing short of inspired, the process used to create the vision was equally intriguing. To communicate the importance and purpose of the UMNH, the architects were taken on a series of road trips across the state. This enlightening experience is what inspired the copper banding and stratification, as well as an interior “canyon” and triangulated walls throughout the building that suggest faulting. The design of the building embodies so perfectly the natural landscape of Utah that I felt as much at home there as in Arches, Bryce, or Canyonlands.

The new exhibit space will showcase Museum objects, with carefully designed zones featuring different aspects of natural history in a way that integrates key themes that cross cut multiple areas of science. In the Past Worlds exhibit, Museum patrons will be able to walk among dinosaurs, gaining different perspectives on the fossilized remains. Another area, Our Backyard, designed for small children, recreates a backyard, complete with trees, a garden, a stream, and tunnels for little ones to crawl through, making it clear that nature doesn’t have to be a faraway place, but can be out our own backdoor. Inside the Museum is a replica of an archeological dig site, which will be interactive and fun for visitors of all ages. Careful humidity controls inside the changing exhibits gallery will allow traveling exhibits that haven’t been able to come in the past, due to our dry climate, to make an appearance at the new building.


Museum Community

The Museum is truly built to optimize educational opportunities for the community. There are several learning labs within the new building that can be used for formal classes taught by Museum staff, or for impromptu lessons in natural history that any Museum visitor can engage in. Large windows in the Paleontology Prep Lab will allow visitors to see firsthand the amazing science that often occurs behind closed doors.


There is also a Community Room that will be used for a variety of functions including community meeting needs. Other larger spaces will be ideal for banquets or conferences. This new facility is more than just inspired design and stunning valley views, more than just a newer, bigger building; it will truly facilitate better environmental education as the Museum continues its extensive research and shares that work with the public.

Member Highlight: Living Planet Aquarium

Tucked amongst a construction zone in Sandy is Utah’s portal to the exciting life of the ocean. I was offered a tour of the Living Planet Aquarium on Monday morning before operating hours. I pull into an empty parking lot, and approach what initially appears to be a pretty average, if not plain looking building. What I come to find out is the outside is camouflage for the fascinating treasures waiting inside. The Living Planet Aquarium is a “501(c) (3) non-profit organization, dedicated to cultivating public interest in the environment, conservation, and the enhancement of our planet and its creatures through adoption, education, research and recreation”. This organization host the most beautiful of exotic wildlife found in and near the great oceans and rivers of the world. Everything from a penguin exhibit to a tidal pool touch tank is located within the exhibits. There is plenty to learn, see, and touch throughout the building.

I am first introduced to Program’s Manager of three years, Carolyn Adler. She is my personal guide through the intelligently- designed displays. “Discover Utah, Ocean Explorer, and Journey to South America” are the various themed exhibits to tour when visiting. It is evident that the organization places value in education; the layout meanders like a flowing river and around each bend contains life to look at and learn about. “Discover Utah” contains a replica of the Great Salt Lake; with mossy water, living plants, and even a Boreal toad, who peacefully sits on a stone as we pass by. What is the Great Salt Lake without a boat ride, right? Playing into every child’s imagination the exhibit has a simulated boat ride, with life-size controls to interact with as you coast through the salty wetlands. The most important aspect of this exhibit is how it explains the importance of the Great Salt Lake to wildlife, the economy, and how we as a society depend on such ecosystems to sustain life. After viewing the endangered and threatened species such as, the June Suckers and the Least Chub, there is a nice tie in to water conservation and water issues that pertain specifically to Utah.

Next on the list to see was the “Ocean Explorer” exhibit. Everything that you picture when you think of the ocean is included in this portion of the tour, and perhaps you may encounter some things that have never crossed your mind. First things first! As I mentioned before there is a tidal pool touch tank, this is an open snake shape pool of water to dip your hands in. What is in the touch tank? Why a Southern Stingray of course! That’s right, located in the TOUCH TANK is a Southern Stingray known to get up to 5 feet across! No need to worry though, these Stingray’s no longer have their sting, so they are pleasant to the touch, well… with the slimy skin, I guess I should say harmless to the touch. Unlike traditional exhibits with every turn there is something to learn through touch, could a kid ask for anything more?!

An educational feature ran by one of the educational presenters has continually changing themes that ask thoughtful questions. To go along with the themed questions is a chain of small aquariums with interesting creatures to feel, such as the pencil urchin and the horseshoe crab, whose existences dates back to 445 million years ago! My favorite of the “Ocean Explorer” exhibit was the “Jelly Room”. This room is completely dark with the only light coming from the glow of the aquariums and educational plaques. With the euphoric music floating throughout the room the jellies seem more to dance through the water than swim. I was first introduced to the upside down jellies, which can create their own algae making them pretty self-sufficient creatures. Next up, receiving its name from its translucent, circular shape; was the harmless moon jelly, floating up and down in the tank. There is so much more to see and explore in the “Ocean Explorer” exhibit, including six different species of sharks, a Giant Pacific Octopus, and a massive, live coral reef structure. The exhibit makes a clear connection between coral reefs and their importance to ocean life and to the planet as a whole.

As I approach the end, I finally enter the “Journey to South America” exhibit. The educational emphasis in this exhibit is biodiversity, which is demonstrated through the amazing structures mimicking the lush vegetation of the Amazon Rain Forest and the opportunity to see incredible creatures. This is a perfect way to learn about biodiversity, with plenty of opportunity to examine and learn about various animals, ranging from the poison dart frog, who receives its toxicity from eating insects to the Arapaima, who breathes air from rising to the surface and inhaling large amounts of oxygen. The amazing wildlife doesn’t stop there; it seems that this section has something for everyone. For excitement check out an eel that has an electronic scale, that measures its voltage when hunting. If you’re looking to meet a titan, then pass by the aquarium that is home to the 10-foot long anaconda. Or if you want to get in touch with your cuddly side, visit the Gentoo penguins, where you can see them dashing in and out of the waters.

After the tour I was invited to the back offices to sit-down with Carolyn and talk more about her personal connection to the organization and the educational programming. When speaking with Carolyn I asked, “What do you enjoy most about working here?” Her answer was the opportunity to educate others about the very things that she is passionate about. She told me that this facility creates an opportunity for children and adults to have a rare learning experience about aquatic life, which normally, they would not be able to have, here in Utah. One way to provide these educational resources is through their educational programming. They have an extensive outreach program, which has themed vans traveling to elementary schools with interesting topics and animals. The program is free and “coordinates with the Utah State Office of Education’s General Core Curriculum for second grade and the Science Core Curriculum for third grade. It helps foster a greater awareness for important environments most students will never see”. Learning doesn’t only have to be for the youth, the organization coordinates an adult lecture series entitled “Adventures in the Deep Sea”. This lecture series explores the unique and strange adaptations of sea life in the deep waters of the ocean.

What I was unaware of but found to be extremely interesting was their volunteer program. I spoke briefly with the volunteer Coordinator, Melissa Bowers and learned about the great strides they are making within the program. One of their many volunteer opportunities is the field program, with projects that consist of collecting and learning about insects, while at the same time, restoring natural areas by picking up trash and debris. After speaking with Carolyn and Melissa I find that not only is the Living Planet Aquarium home to the most exotic and fascinating of creatures, but the programming offers educational and volunteer opportunities for all ages. Exiting from the back offices and re-entering the exhibit, it was now operating hours. I found the facility, that earlier was virtually silent, now filled and bustling with kids and adults cocking their necks out just as I had done, to get a closer look at the fascinating life behind the glass. I took a few more pictures of the Amazonian fish and passed through the jelly room once more. I then walked outside and turned around to take one last picture of the building. I left with an overwhelming urge to book the next available trip to the coast, unfortunately, my current budget does not put me in the position to take such a trip, though I think a couple of visits back to the Living Planet Aquarium will definitely suffice until then.

Members in the news: Salt Lake City's Rowland Hall goes green

USEE member Rowland Hall was featured in the Deseret News last week for their outstanding efforts in sustainability. The article highlights that Rowland Hall is the first private school in Utah to install solar panels. The 48 panels will serve as an educational tool for teachers and students at the school.

Member Highlight: Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest

Earlier this month I met with Loyal Clark who is the Public Affairs Specialist for the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. I visited this USEE Institutional Member’s offices in Provo, UT, to find out more about the programs and services that they offer.

Loyal took me on a tour of their offices, which are located in the Will J. Robinson Federal Building, and I was able to meet most of the staff that works for the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. There are quite a few people who work there, including civil engineers, cartographers, biologists, and administrative staff. It was very eye-opening for me because, though I know there are a lot of things happening in National Forests with many different career options, the Forest Service so often means forest rangers and fire fighters to me. I also learned about the services the Forest Service provides such as fire and forest management, campground and infrastructure maintenance, hunting information, maps (for trails and for other things such as grazing and water sheds), fire safety information, and all things Smokey Bear.

In addition to touring the building and talking with the staff, Loyal also showed me all of the different environmental education programs that the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest houses and they have some cool stuff! The staff often do school visits on request to talk about the forest. Most of these requests are from 3rd-5th grade teachers, but can accommodate any grade level. They also receive a lot of requests from high schools as well to talk about the different career opportunities within the Forest Service.

They also house educational displays that teachers can check out to use to teach their students about various environmental education topics such as climate change, watersheds, and others. They also have educational boxes that have curriculum, books, games, and specimens that teachers can check out for 2 weeks at a time to take back to their classrooms. Currently they have boxes about bats, insects, and tread lightly. Loyal is currently working to develop three new boxes in addition to the three they already have: climate change, the water cycle, and bark beetles.

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache also has more environmental and science education on their website. Just look for the “Learning Center” tab on the right hand side. There are pages about various outdoor education experiences, conservation education, the history and culture of the forest, outdoor safety and ethics, and pages for kids and teachers and parents.

Another excellent program the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest houses is the Diamond Fork Youth Forest. This outdoor learning environment is a natural outdoor laboratory where students are directly involved with a wide range of recreational and educational projects. Member Highlight: The Nature Conservancy - Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve

Last week I had the opportunity to visit The Nature Conservancy's Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve. Heidi Nedreberg, who is the head of the education and outreach programs at the preserve, let me tag along for one of their volunteer training days.

If you have never been to the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, I highly recommend it. The preserve is located on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, in the Layton area, and features over a mile of boardwalks that loop through the wetlands. There is a massive outdoor pavilion with educational signs about the various birds that live on and migrate though the preserve. There is also a look-out tower at the far end of the boardwalk perfect for bird-watching.

On my visit, I got to interact with some of the volunteer naturalists that lead the tours that come to the preserve. Most of these groups are participating in the Wings and Water Program, an award-winning, hands-on wetlands education program designed to meet state science core curriculum standards for 4th grade students. Part of the Wings and Water Program is a visit to the preserve where students can discover the wetlands in a naturalist guided tour.

While we were out discussing various techniques of engaging students in different areas along the boardwalk, we also saw many different birds out in the wetlands and marshes. Red winged black birds, a blue heron, mallards, pelicans and several other flocks that I wasn't quick enough to catch their names. We found a garter snake near the supply shed and we even heard several frogs singing as we were packing up to head home.

So if you are looking for a fun place to take your family for a little outdoor discovery, a field trip for your 4th graders, a place to bird-watch and discover the migratory birds that come through the Salt Lake fly-way, or somewhere peaceful to stretch your legs and get outside, come and check out the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve! The preserve is always open, and the new visitor's center is now open every day from 7am - 8pm.  Hope to see you there!

Member Highlight: Momentum Recycling

A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to visit a local glass recycling plant as well as the insulation factory across the road from the glass recycling plant. This trip was part of a tour that Jeff Whitbeck, co-owner of Momentum Recycling (a USEE Institutional Member) and one of our newest USEE Board Members.


Momentum Recycling is a local business dedicated to helping organizations move toward zero waste. They do this by providing waste-stream assessments, helping each organization develop a custom recycling program, and then implementing the customized program. Part of each recycling program is setting up a comprehensive recycling collections procedure for each client. Momentum Recycling also provides educational tools for the employees, clients, residents, and guests of each organization to help them understand the importance of an organization's commitment to zero waste. Once these steps have been implemented, Momentum Recycling also works to publicize each organization's commitment to move toward zero waste.


Different organizations have different recycling plans depending on their goals and the facilities used by each organization, and Momentum Recycling has many different ways to help each organization move toward zero waste. There are mixed recyclables bins, cardboard and white office paper, glass, organic waste, and electronic waste options. In order to manage all of the recyclables generated by organizations, Momentum Recycling works with several government agencies, non-profit groups, and material recovery facilities and recycling facilities across the Wasatch Front.

As part of Momentum Recycling's commitment to education, they schedule some occasional site visits to help inform their clients about where the recyclables are going. One of these visits was to the glass recycling plant and the fiberglass insulation factory. It was fascinating to learn about the different kinds of glass that can be recycled, the history of the plant, and where most of the recycled glass goes when it's done being processed. Most of the glass that Momentum Recycling processes for their clients goes to the glass recycling site near Owens Corning, which is the fiberglass insulation manufacturer across the street. Most of the glass at this plant gets ground back down into sand so that Owens Corning may use the recycled glass in the manufacture of fiberglass insulation. It was certainly a treat to learn about this process. Thank you Momentum Recycling for setting it up!

Member Highlight: Utah Botanical Center

At the beginning of October, I visited the Utah Botanical Center, which is a Utah State University Extension facility, as well as an Institutional Member of USEE. It is home to research and demonstration projects focused on sustainable living in the Intermountain West and houses an arboretum, the Utah House, and their newest addition, Wetland Discovery Point. Studies of water conservation, horticulture, water quality enhancement, wetland ecology, integrated pest management, urban forestry, agriculture, fish and wildlife, highway enhancement, and storm-water management combine to make the center a living laboratory.

I had never been to the Utah Botanical Center, and I was excited to explore the grounds, but I was mainly there to get a tour of their newly-built Wetland Discovery Point.

I met Mark Larese-Casanova, who is the Education Specialist for the Botanical Center and Chair of the Program Advisory Council Executive Committee at USEE, and he gave me the grand tour. Wetland Discovery Point is a Platinum LEED Certified building and features all kinds of innovative and educational sustainable practices. Every aspect of the building is designed to optimize the energy of the sun from the way the windows are positioned with the roof line in relation to where the sun is throughout the seasons, to the moving solar panels that automatically follow the sun across the sky during the day, like sunflowers, to optimize the amount of sunlight falling on the panels.

Other features include a giant cistern that captures 90% of the rain and snow that falls on the roof (the other 10% flows back into the ponds), geo-thermal heating systems, and water conservation through the use of low-flow faucets and toilets that conserve 30% more water than other facilities – the water used in the toilets is from the roof’s rain barrel. The building is designed so efficiently that even though the building is equipped with heating and air conditioning, these only need to be used on the very coldest days of winter, or the most sweltering days in the summer.

Even though Wetland Discovery Point is one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the state, its main purpose is wetlands and water conservation and education. While I was there, the building crew was steadily working on getting the board walks finished. Wetland Discovery Point will be a fabulous place for students of all ages to learn and explore why wetlands are important, collect bugs and water samples right off of the boardwalks, and learn about water and energy conservation. The facility has already hosted a small number of field trips, and Mark is excited to really get the community more involved with the Wetland Discovery Point as the final touches come together. In conjunction with the Wetland Discovery Point, Mark also showed me the Utah House. Their mission is to demonstrate, educate, and empower the public about new ways of building homes and creating landscapes that promote energy efficiency, water conservation, universal design principles, healthy indoor environments, and the sustainable use of all resources. The Utah House features many great opportunities of how to learn to make your own house more environmentally friendly, whether you are building a new house, or changing some things in an older home. Some of these learning opportunities include different ways to conserve water, both inside the house and out in the yard and garden, as well as solar water heaters, and a green roof on top of the storage shed:


I learned a lot about the both the Utah House and the Wetland Discovery Point on my visit. I learned not only about what the environmental education goals are for these educational facilities, but also learned a little about wetlands and energy and water conservations myself. I will definitely be back, and I encourage you all to head to Kaysville and check out what they have to offer.
